FGIM Field Trip

Compass Minerals and Devil’s Slide Cement Plant

Depart: 8:00 AM – Utah Department of Natural Resources, 1594 W North Temple, Salt Lake City, Utah

Return: 4:00 PM – Utah Department of Natural Resources

$85: Includes bus travel, boxed lunch, beverage

This field trip will explore unique industrial mineral operations at Great Salt Lake and in the nearby Wasatch Mountains. The first stop will be at Compass Minerals where potash, magnesium chloride, and salt (sodium chloride) are produced. Compass Minerals produces these commodities from the unique brine of Great Salt Lake through a series of evaporative ponds and a plant operation. Great Salt Lake is the only domestic source of potassium sulfate, a specialized form of potash. The second stop will feature Holcim’s Devil’s Slide cement plant. This plant serves the Wasatch Front providing cement sourced from the Jurassic Twin Creek Formation as well as other geologic units. The structural geology of the Devil’s Slide quarry is complex and photogenic.

Attendees should dress in layers and be prepared for cool or warm weather. Sunscreen is advised.

Attendees should bring steel toed footwear, a safety vest, safety glasses and hard hat. The site can provide a few hard hats if necessary.
